Let’s start first with ‘real’ tea that comes from the plant Camellia sinensis. This includes the majors such as Black, Red (Our GABA Tea), Green, Oolong, Pu-erh and even White Tea. ‘Other’ teas such as herbal Chamomile, Peppermint and others are labeled as teas due to the fact that the herbs are infused into hot water. Camellia sinensis has its roots from four thousand years ago and has been known to have many health benefits. Though most studies have been of Green Tea, the general consensus still sanctions that the high concentrations of polyphenols, an antioxidant, ranks equally or more that many vegetables and fruits in the ORAC score (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity). This makes tea a very strong component of cancer prevention. Tea has been claimed to be helpful for atherosclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, LDL Cholesterol, liver disease, neurodegenerative diseases and, yes, even halitosis. There is also evidence that suggests tea can increase endurance by enhancing fat metabolism.
American Dietetic Association spokeswoman, Katherine Tallmage, MA, RD, LD, stated:
“There doesn’t seem to be a downside to tea. I think it’s a great alternative to coffee drinking. First, tea has less caffeine. It’s pretty well established that the compounds in tea – their flavanoids – are good for the heart and may reduce cancer.”
We couldn’t agree more. To put the caffeine statement into perspective — the American Dietetic Association puts the caffeine content in a cup of freshly brewed coffee at 85mg versus 40mg in a cup of tea. Compare a cup of Green Tea which only has 22mg due to green tea having the least amount of oxidation in its crafting process.
We enjoy tea for the tradition. We appreciate tea for the benefits. Here are 10 Major Health Benefits of Tea:
